Students will be able toGRAMMAR SYLLABUS 2012-2013 Department of International Relations Naboka O.M. Room 26 TERMS This course is designed to improve students' skills in the main areas of English Grammar and concentrates on areas you need to receive the credit or pass the exams. Grammar is that system of principles and rules that allow us to organize our words and sentences into coherent, meaningful language. Grammatical usage "errors" occur whenever any of us violate those principles or rules of grammatical organization.
Everybody can learn a language (we have all already at least one!) but it takes time, patience and hard work. Of course a grammar is not a course in itself. It should be seen as an invaluable supplement to the day to day work in the classroom and as a useful resource for self-study.
This course contains explanations and descriptions with many of example sentences. For some students the material may be new; for others the material will provide opportunities for revision. At our lessons we shall do a variety of traditional exercise types (for example: gap-filling, rewriting, multiple choice, etc.) alongside tasks and activities which involve problem-solving, awareness-raising and text-manipulating activities. Attention is also given to idiomatic patterns and uses in everyday language. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this class, students should be able to demonstrate the following skills:
Students will be able to 1. identify and correct common errors in grammar, usage, and punctuation; 2. use the basic terminology of English grammar to discuss the parts of a sentence; 3. recognize sentence parts and types and how they can be arranged for clear and effective communication; 4. understand the nature of language and the changes it undergoes depending on time, place, setting, purpose, audience, or medium; 5. improve thinking, studying, and writing skills and styles.
Practically each lesson will begin with a short test on previous material so that you can check whether you have understood the main grammar points. The tests do two things. Firstly, they enable you to find out how well you have mastered the grammar. Secondly, the tests give you practice in handling term papers and exam-type questions. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Attendance/Absence Policies: 1. If you are more than 10 minutes late, you will be marked absent. However, please attend class even if you are late. (N.B. Three late arrivals = 1 absence.)
2. There are no excused absences. Class attendance is mandatory. More than 3 days of absence for classes will result in your final grade being lowered. Excessive absence from class or absence from more than 2 tests is sufficient grounds for failure in the credit/exam.
3. "Feeling sick" is not an excusable reason for missing class. Legitimate, excused absences must be documented through the office of the dean.. Please schedule doctors' appointments, interviews, etc., for times other than class meetings.
4. Homework must be completed by the beginning of the class it is due. Assignments that are more than 2 class days late will receive a "0" unless special permission has been granted by the instructor. It is a student’s responsibility to find out daily homework assignments if he/she is absent from a class. Please get the telephone number of a classmate upon whom you can depend to get handouts for you and give you information if you are absent.
5. Participation in class activities is expected from every student. Class participation includes obedience to all school regulations, inlcuding dress code policies. Oral participation is extremely important! You will be given a grade on every assignment, both oral and written.
6. Short quizzes will be given over selected sections of material. Unannounced quizzes may be given based on the week's material for the course.
7. Tests will be given at appropriate intervals throughout the course. There will also be a MIDTERM AND A FINAL TEST. A student must be present on test days Students will not be allowed to make up tests for unexcused absences and will receive a grade of "0".
8. After the final grade has been received on any assignment, you may not rewrite the paper for a different grade.
