Предполагают выбор (альтернативу) одного из двух лиц / предметов / действий / качеств / признаков.
Могут быть заданы к любому члену предложения. Выбор, обозначаемый словом ог (или) в водиться в общие вопросы и имеет равнозначный характер (предлоги, формы, число), при этом схемы вопросительных предложений остаются без изменений.

Аналогично задаем выбор (альтернативу) и к другим словам.
Если альтернативный вопрос относится к подлежащему, то подлежащих в предложении становится два, и оба ставятся с вспомогательным глаголом:
Do you or does your brother smoke these cigars? => Вы или ваш брат курите эти сигары?
